ULTRA HIGH SPEED PARTS FORMING
Thrufeed and cutoff roll forming is an ultrahigh speed
rotary open-die forging process. It is similar to skewed-axis thread rolling process, but differs in that instead of
producing continuous helix thread form, it produces simple discrete
forms such as balls, rings, rollers and pins with conical
ends. A typical application is the rolling of 1/8" (3.2
mm) low-carbon steel
balls at rates exceeding 4000 per minute. Other applications
include military munitions rotating band with an O.D. 1-1/2 (38.1
mm) and
wall thickness of 1/8 (3.2 mm) at 200 parts per
minute.
Such production rates, combined with material savings, excellent form
repeatability, and in some cases superior physical characteristics make
the process worthy of consideration by anyone faced with the problem of
producing high volumes of small parts with simple shapes
